About Cambium

Founded in 1998, Cambium creates and nurtures beautiful, purposeful, quality landscapes while offering the highest level of customer service. We collaborate with our clients to craft inspired garden experiences, and act with stewardship towards the land and local community.

The Cambium design/build team maintains solid partnerships with a skilled group of architects, engineers, interior designers, and is an active member of local and professional groups.

Our studio in the Madrona neighborhood is the hub for our design activity, while the build team is hard at work on construction and maintenance projects throughout the region.

Our team designs, constructs and maintains gardens and landscapes every season of the year

Working closely with clients, helping them to find a personal expression through their garden is a very rewarding experience. Appreciating all landscape design styles, my current fascination is with minimalist, modern landscapes.

Jonathan’s carpentry skills come in handy while crafting his own fiberglass surfboards. His young children want to ride the waves too—but for now they paddle hard to be the great surfers they are destined to be.

“I love listening to clients’ wishes and bringing them to life through design. Garden landscapes are living stories, shaped by nature, time, and movement. With care and curiosity, I work collaboratively to uncover what makes a place truly special. Outside of work, making pottery and exploring nature inspires my design.”

Press and Publications

“Much as if you were visiting a secluded Tuscan villa, the many alfresco garden areas extend and complement specific rooms in the client’s home, offering a compelling reason to come outdoors for entertaining, relaxing or gardening.”

“…infused with Asian influence, the landscape includes Japanese maples and hinoki…three select boulders, mimicking islands in the distance sit in a berm of blue oat grass…”

“Think texture when designing plantings. Contrasting textures…add incredible dimension to a landscape. Try bold, broadleaf hosta…with softly arched linear Japanese forest grass among tight, fernlike sprays of …hinoki foliage.”

“[Cambium] brings a fresh, upbeat approach to the garden, incorporating dynamic structures and welcoming spaces into [their] designs…pairing metal with wood, stone with water and giving clients a skillful selection of plants that add structure and form to the landscape.”

“Two courtyards and three patios offer intimate outdoor spots…to relax, dine, and entertain. Thoughtful connections between the house and garden…offer a compelling excuse to move outside and live in the garden.”

“With 482-acre Bridle Trails State Park nearby… [the] plant palette [is] mostly restricted to Northwest natives and plants…in form and effect… ‘It’s really a four-season garden,’ the homeowner says.”
